VISIT CASTLES IN PERTHSHIRE
Within easy distance of Milton Cottage B&B there are several interesting castles to visit.
Auchterarder Castle - Royal hunting lodge from the 11thC. Edward I of England stayed in 1296 while invading Scotland. Treaty of Perth signed here in 1559 by Mary of Guise establishing Protestantism. Now a ruin.
Balhousie Castle, Perth - 15thC . Home of the Earls of Kinnoull. Totally rebuilt externally but contains early features. Now houses the Black Watch Regimental museum.
Blair Castle, Blair Atholl home of the Atholl Highlanders. Open to the public during Summer season. Well worth a visit on a rainy day!
Drummond Castle, Crieff with magnificent gardens
Dundurn, Comrie - Hilltop Iron Age fort. Pictish stronghold besieged by Scots in 683. Scots King Giric killed here in 889.
Finlarig Castle, Killin - Built by Black Duncan Campbell of Glenorchy.
Kinclaven Castle, Blairgowrie - Built by Alexander II 1235. Captured by William Wallace in 1297. Royal castle, last used around 1450. Now very ruined.
Kinfauns Castle, Perth - 1825 mansion on the site of the original castle. Kinfaus lands and title given to Thomas de Longueville as reward for supporting both Wallace & Bruce.
Loch Earn Castle, St Fillans - On an island on the loch
Castle Menzies, Aberfeldy - Home of Clan Menzies
Taymouth Castle, Aberfeldy - 19thC mansion on the foundations of a tower house built by Sir Colin Campbell of Glenorchy in 1580. These Campbells were made Earls of Breadalbane in 1681. Became a hotel in the 1920s. Is now surrounded by a golf course and derelict but work is starting again to make it into a hotel once more.
